Investigating urinary incontinence patients coping with their ilnness

Abstract

The research is aimed to teach incontinence patients the importance of self care, to define the methods they use to cope with their illness, to propose appropriate solutions and to evaluate theri coping methods. This research medium is composed of 235 patients applying to Izmir Odemis Dr. Aytun Cıray Hospital gynecology and birth clinic between November 2006 and February 2007 and the research sample was 163 patients chosen randomly. Incontinence patients who dont accept the research were not taken into study. During data collection a questionnaire that was prepared by the researchers and composed of 29 questions was used. The questionnaire was performed by the researchers by talking face to face to the patient. During data evaluation SPSS for Windows 11.0 statistic program was used and percent q-square test was performed. Average age of the patients were x= 43,24 ± 13,47 years old. 76,7% of the patients had incontinence disease during the research time, 36,8 % indicated that their diet had influence on the disease, 78,5% of the patients did not reduce drinking water during incontinence, 70,6% took the problem seriously when they first realized it, 62,6% of patient did not know another exercise in the incontinence, 72,4% did not have any treatment related to incontinence disease, 34,42% use something for not to wet themselves and 12,3% use sometimes this material. 93,9% of them were volunteer to take education about incontinence.
