LIFE SATISFACTION AND HOPELESNESS IN HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS

Abstract

This study is carried out as descriptive and analitic with the aim of determining the
relationship between life satisfaction and hopelessness in hemodialysis patients.
The study was carried on 136 patients in 3 hemodialysis units in Erzurum between the dates
December 2003 and February 2004. The data were collected using a questionnaire determining
the sociodemographic features, Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) and Beck Hopelessness
Scale.
In the result of the research, mean hopelessness score was 8.8±5.1 and mean life
satisfaction score was 19.2±6.7 There was a negative significant correlation between
hopelessness and life satisfaction ( r = .-365, p<0.01). It was detected that life satisfaction was
affected age, education. Educational levels and professions of the haemodialysis patients have
led to a difference of significance on hopelessness.
