Abstract

The subject of makam descriptions goes back to  Pre-Ottoman Empire period. In this period, makam phenomenon which is often studied in the middle age manuscripts of Islamic world was considered as a part of mathematic science. First Turkish music manuscripts had written in 15th Century during Ottoman period. This study is aimed to put forward how considered makam descriptions and classifications by author in this period. Eight  manuscripts have analyzed and compared with each other which are Arabic, Persian and ancient Turkish. It is seen that makams were described with short seyir (melodic development), makam circles and on the accord system of instruments in Turkish manuscripts which are written in 15th century . These description ways are different more than Arabic and Persian manuscripts. Makams were described with alphabetic notation gave their scale and interval in those manuscripts. There are also some differences with regard to makam classifications between this two school.  It is concluded that Ladikli Mehmet Çelebi who is one of this period’s aouthor improved a characteristic makam description synthesizing each two description way.

Author Biography

Oya Levendoğlu Öner, Erciyes University

She was born 1974 in Seydisehir. She began to undergraduate education at Selcuk University, Education Faculty, Department of Music Education in 1991. She graduated from the Music Education Department at Selcuk University in 1995 and continued to pursue her master’s studies with Prof. Dr. Ayhan Zeren, who is known for the subjects of the science of sound and Turkish music theory. She began working at the Music Department, Fine Arts Faculty, at Erciyes University in 1996 and pursued a doctoral degree at Gazi University from 1998 to 2002 with Prof. Dr. Cihat Can. Her dissertation title was “Makams from the 13th Century On and Their Evolutions.” She continued to work at Erciyes University as Assistant Professor (2003) and Associate Professor (2006) in the field of musicology. She has performed the ud in recitals and concerts with various ensembles in and outside of Turkey. She premiered the Ud Koncertino composed by Munir Nurettin Beken in Cemal Resit Rey, one of İstanbul’s most famous concert halls, in 2005. It was the first ud concertino in Turkey and was part of a project titled “Melodies of Makam for Chamber Orkestra and Oud” and supported by Erciyes University. Her performances blended both traditional and modern styles. She has studied with renowned ud performers and pedagogues, such as Prof. Dr. Gülçin Yahya and Prof. Mutlu Torun. She completed a two-year term as Interim Dean of the Fine Arts Faculty at Erciyes University between 2008 and 2010. She visited University of South Florida, School of Music between 2010 and 2011 as a visiting scholar and hold seminars and recitals about Turkish music and culture.
